On the first weekend of December 2024, People & Nature Welfare Society organised its largest animal welfare camp to date — a free veterinary camp in the Cinemon area of Gorakhpur that treated over 200 stray animals in just two days.

Stray animals are among the most overlooked members of our community. They suffer from untreated wounds, mange, infections, and malnutrition — often in plain sight. Our animal welfare team decided that silence was no longer an option.

The Scale of the Problem

Gorakhpur's stray animal population has grown significantly over the past decade. Municipal surveys estimate over 12,000 stray dogs and thousands of stray cattle in the district. Without organised veterinary care, many suffer preventable deaths.

What the Camp Offered

We partnered with 8 veterinary doctors and 30 volunteers to deliver a comprehensive range of services — all completely free of cost:

  • Anti-rabies and parvovirus vaccinations
  • Deworming and tick treatment
  • Wound dressing and post-surgery care
  • Eye and ear infection treatment
  • Nutritional supplementation for malnourished animals
  • Sterilisation support for reducing overpopulation

Community Response

Local residents were deeply moved. Many brought animals they had been feeding for years but could never afford to get treated. Families brought their own pets too, grateful for the free veterinary access. The camp became a meeting point for animal lovers across the neighbourhood.

What's Next

In 2025, we plan to conduct quarterly vet camps across 5 different zones of Gorakhpur, reaching 1,000+ animals annually. We are also working with local authorities to set up a permanent animal first-aid station.
