Diwali is known as the festival of lights, joy, and togetherness. But for many elderly citizens living alone, it can be one of the loneliest days of the year.

In October 2024, our team at People & Nature Welfare Society decided that no senior citizen in our community should feel forgotten during Diwali.

The Reality We Witnessed

During our pre-Diwali visits to nearby villages and urban colonies, we identified over 80 elderly individuals living alone — widows, abandoned parents, and seniors whose children had migrated for work.

  • Many had no visitors during festivals
  • Some were financially struggling
  • Several were battling health issues alone
  • Most simply wanted companionship

Spreading Light Beyond Diyas

On Diwali morning, our volunteers visited each senior citizen with:

  • Sweet boxes and dry ration kits
  • Warm shawls and blankets
  • Handwritten greeting cards from children
  • Personal conversations and emotional support

"This is the first time in years someone came to celebrate Diwali with me. Today I don’t feel alone."

More Than Charity — It Was Companionship

While ration kits and gifts were important, what mattered most was time. Volunteers sat with them, listened to their stories, laughed together, and in some cases, wiped tears.

We organized a small community Diwali event where seniors lit diyas together, sang bhajans, and shared meals.

"True celebration begins when no one is left behind."

The Emotional Impact

By the end of the day, we realized this initiative wasn’t just about celebrating a festival. It was about restoring dignity and belonging.

  • Several seniors joined our regular monthly support circle
  • Local youth pledged to visit them regularly
  • We began planning a permanent Senior Support Programme

What's Next

In 2025, we aim to expand this outreach to 200 senior citizens across more villages. Festivals should bring warmth — not loneliness.

Join us next Diwali. Sponsor a senior citizen. Spread light where it’s needed most.
